🪴 When Is the Right Time to Repot Your Plant? How to Repot the Right Way?

One day, you notice roots starting to poke out from the drainage holes of your plant pot. Not only that, the leaves seem to be getting smaller and the soil dries out faster, even though the plant is in the same spot and you’re watering it as usual.

🌱 These are clear signs that it’s time to repot your plant—in other words, it’s time for a pot upgrade! 🥳

But don’t worry—repotting isn’t as hard as it sounds. You just need to do it carefully so your plant doesn’t go into shock.

In this blog post, we’ll guide you through step-by-step repotting instructions suitable for both beginners and seasoned plant parents.

⁉️ Why Do You Need to Repot a Plant?

Before we dive into the “how”, let’s understand the “why”. Is repotting really necessary?

Here are a few reasons:

1. Root Bound Issues
When roots start growing out of the bottom drainage holes, that’s a clear sign the plant has outgrown its current pot. It needs more space! 🍃

2. Old or Compacted Soil
If the soil becomes hard or doesn’t absorb water well, it’s time for a change. Healthy soil is essential for plant growth. For indoor plants, a well-draining mix (like perlite, cocopeat, and black soil) works best 🌿

3. Plants need space to grow
Just like any living thing, plants need room to breathe and grow. A larger pot gives the roots more space, encouraging healthier, stronger growth 💪

⏰ When is The Best Time to Repot?

Try not to repot during hot midday sun—this can stress your plant out. Instead, repot in the early morning or late afternoon when it’s cooler.

Also, avoid repotting if your plant is sick or dropping leaves. Give it time to recover first. Once it starts pushing out new shoots 🌱, then it’s safe to repot.

✂️ Tools You’ll Need

  • New Pot : Slightly bigger than the old one and must have drainage holes
  • Suitable Soil Mix : For indoor plants, a blend of perlite, cocopeat and black soil is ideal (available in our store)
  • Gloves : For hygiene and to prevent from injury
  • Mini Trowel : Makes it easier to scoop and move soil

🔄 Step-by-Step Guide to Repotting

1. Remove the plant from its old pot
Hold the base of the plant near the soil and gently pull. If it’s stuck, try tapping or squeezing the sides of the pot to loosen it.

2. Clean the roots
Shake off some of the old soil. No need to remove all of it, just enough to loosen the roots. Trim any dead or black roots with clean scissors.

3. Add fresh soil to the new pot
Put a layer of soil at the bottom. The function is to raise the plant to the correct height in the new pot.

4. Place the plant and fill in the soil
Center the plant and make sure it stands upright. Add soil around the sides and gently press it down to secure the plant. Make sure it’s not too tight.

✨ Extra Tips from PLNT.Team

  • Avoid placing your plant in direct sunlight immediately after repotting. Let it rest for 2-3 days in a shaded spot.
  • It’s normal if your plant looks a bit droopy right after repotting. It’s just adjusting to its new “home”.
  • Don’t fertilize right away! Wait around 2-3 weeks before applying any fertilizer to avoid stressing the plant.
